a) The Fair Chance Campaign (Ban the Box)

As you may remember, several organizations in CUAMI's network were recently brought together to create a Ban the Box campaign! For more information on Ban the Box and our campaign, visit the blog entry explaining the campaign.

This past Thursday, we had over 30 people in attendance at our first Fair Chance Pledge Collection Training! Participants were trained on how to persuade employers and housing providers to sign our pledge to Ban the Box, were assigned employers and housing providers to seek out, and were assigned to teams for follow-up. If you're interested in getting trained but didn't make it to the last training, don't worry! We'll have another training in a couple of months. Keep an eye on your email for the announcement.

b) Policing the Police

The Policing the Police Task Force was born out of the September 3rd community forum in 5 Points in response to the events in Ferguson, Missouri. With over 100 community members present, we unanimously resolved that our community wants an independent agency in charge of investigating and disciplining police and sheriff department officers (to change the system we currently have where the police supposedly "police" themselves). The Task Force has so far met twice and settled on short, mid, and long-term goals.

Short term: Pressuring the Police and Sheriff's Departments to release the reports  they're withholding from the Office of the Independent Monitor, who is tasked with giving recommendations on law enforcement discipline. Find out how to get involved here!

Mid term: Passing an amendment to the Denver City Charter creating this independent agency, elected by the people, to investigate and discipline police officers

Long term: a state-wide initiative to the same tune as our city-wide effort

The Task Force is currently doing research on what this city-wide initiative would take and what it exactly should look like. Help us out! Our next planning meeting is on Oct. 8th at 7pm, location TBA. Email to get on the mailing list for the Task Force and receive regular updates on the campaign!  We're also planning a vigil for the evening of Oct. 22nd for the National Day Against Police Brutality. Join us in honoring the lives of victims of police brutality and give input on our city-wide initiative! Information about the vigil can be found here.

Sign the Petition for Justice4Nate!
The Colorado Anti-Violence Program (CAVP) calls on our communities of individuals, families and organizations in joining us as we support and stand in solidarity with Nate Mancha, a 24-year old Latino gay man who defended himself against homophobic hate violence. Three months later, it is Mancha, not his attacker, awaiting trial for 2nd degree attempted murder.  This case fits a disturbing trend of people of color and LGBTQ people facing prosecution for defending their lives. Add your name to the petition here!

Pick up your pen! Shame the Denver Police and Sheriff Departments for withholding reports from the Office of the Independent Monitor:
